How To

How to be an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. An automotive technician must have the ability to quickly diagnose and fix problems.

To become an automotive technician, a person must first earn an associate's degree from a vocational college. After completing the program, he/she must take the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certification exam. ASE stands to American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Two sections make up the ASE certification examination. The first section tests the ability to use mechanical knowledge. The second section tests the ability to apply practical skills. You will need to attend an authorized testing site in order to pass the test. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. For example, some states require candidates to attend a training course, while others allow them to study independently. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeships typically last three years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Schools offer classes during business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

After completing an apprenticeship, a student becomes a journeyman. Journeymen usually spend four to five year learning how to install major systems like transmissions, differentials steering gear, suspensions, drive shafts, and steering gear. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Many employers prefer hiring journeymen because they know the job well and understand what the customer expects.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This figure is expected to rise 18 percent between 2009-2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.
