How to become an Automotive Technician

A technician who works on vehicles is an automotive technician. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. He/she helps customers fix their cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, tractors, trailers, farm equipment, planes, helicopters, jet skis, watercraft, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, etc. An automotive technician must have the ability to quickly diagnose and fix problems.

An associate degree should be obtained from a vocational school if you wish to work as an auto technician. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands as American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two parts to the ASE certification exam. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. To take the test, you must visit one of the approved testing locations. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

Before becoming an automotive technician, a candidate must pass the test. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require that applicants attend a training class, while others allow them freedom to study at their own pace. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Some students will learn advanced repair techniques, such as changing shocks, installing air filters, and replacing engines. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen typically spend four to five years learning how to install major systems, such as transmissions, differentials, steering gear, suspensions, and drive shafts. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Because they have a good understanding of the job and what customers expect, many employers prefer to hire journeymen.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 1.7 million automotive mechanic jobs were available in 2010. This figure is expected to rise 18 percent between 2009-2020. When a candidate plans to open his/her own shop he/she should be ready to invest thousands of dollars in equipment.

Automotive technicians' salaries depend on many factors such as the employer, whereabouts, education level and experience. A jobless person could make an average of $20,000 annually. Technicians with a bachelor's degree earn about $27,000 per annum. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year.
